Fallen Bird is a tender and honest journey through childhood grief; a memento mori in lyrical prose for the ages.

A fallen bird can teach us many things. When a child finds one in the solitary woods, wonderings about its life and death abound. Through the eyes of a child, the bright and cheerful life of a simple songbird is colorfully imagined, its death is humbly honored, and mysteries of nature are revealed.

1957, three years after Brown vs. the Board of Education outlawed segregation in U.S. schools, the NAACP enrolled nine African-American students into the previously all-white Little Rock Public School as the first step of the state’s integration plan. But the governor did not approve. He sent in the Arkansas national guard, who, along with a white mob, attempted to block their entry.

In response, the NAACP sent a team of attorneys headed by Thurgood Marshall, along with armed police escorts, to protect the nine students. Through picketing, racial slurs, and violence, the kids persevered, their courage earning them a quality of education that was long overdue.

Illustrated children’s book

Available SPRING 2020!

In the second half of 2019 I had the sincere pleasure of illustrating this wild and engaging story for young children, written by the incredibly talented and inspired Lisa Bright.

For all the parents who have ever asked their kids a question only to get the answer “I don’t know” - “What did you dream about?” is a call & response book to encourage conversation and spark imagination.

In Lisa’s words, “I hope you enjoy reading and sharing it as much as we enjoyed creating it!”
